Throughout his life, education and the outdoors have been Al's passion, and the opportunity to pass on these experiences to young people give him great satisfaction. As a qualified teacher of PE, and having majored in Outdoor Education, he also holds Mountain Leader (Summer) and SPA in rock climbing. He has also mentored Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions over many years. His role in schools has allowed him to work with a broad spectrum of young people, from primary to sixth form, and from very diverse backgrounds. He took voluntary redundancy from teaching in August 2016 to pursue a career in the outdoors. Within the school environment he progressed to be a senior leader, which equipped him with many additional skills to take into outdoor work. He worked as part of a progressive team, reacting to, and dealing with, many pressures and daily challenges. Al has also run many residential trips to outdoor centres and ski trips abroad, and feels very proud seeing the progression the children made, both in their level of skill and in their confidence. As a child growing up in the Highlands of Scotland, the outdoors has always been part of his life. He takes part in both summer and winter mountaineering in many parts of the country, and is an accomplished skier both in Scotland and abroad. Sanjeed (Ruminator) is our techy guy who has a passion for nature, trails, photography and communication (although we are still trying to figure out who he communicates with). If you have a passion for anything that, creeps, crawls, growls, flies or simply sways in the wind, he’s probably already talking to it. Mostly lost in his own world of what he calls “Essenceology” he can best be spotted (when he is missing from the group) by looking for a monstrous backpack that looks like it has the kitchen sink, “essential camera gear” he claims, but we are not convinced. He also claims that he spends his time taking care of the sick when he is not on a trail. Some of us are guessing he works as a vet but who knows, that’s a discussion for another day. You can get a glimpse of his work here.
